Your team and your responsibilities

Team/division description

Power Electronics Design team is part of the R&D 2 Powertrain Design Division. We develop  vehicle charging system components such as the on-board charger, 12V DCDC converter, external charge cable,...  as well as the main drive motor inverter and other powertrain-related power electronic commodities.

Your project

The increasing share of renewables in the energy mix creates challenges for the European electrical grid in terms of supply & demand balancing. Electric vehicles -with their battery storage capacity- can be a valuable resource to help stabilising our grids. To fully leverage this potential, bi-directional power exchange with the grid (V2G) can be a game changer. Our team is currently developing a V2G solution based on a bi-directional on-board charger with a dedicated wall box. We are looking for an intern to support our team with system grid code compliance validation on our HILS testbench.

Practical expectations:

  1. Get up to speed with AC V2G system testing requirements & test environment:
  • Acquaint yourself with EU grid code (test) requirements & procedures.

(We have the materials & knowledge to get you up to speed quickly.)

  • Understand ISO 15118-20 communication protocol between wall box & vehicle.
  • Get hands-on experience on our HILS test bench system by working with the bench operator team.

  1. Support system evaluation on the HILS bench:
  • Review & help refine existing grid code test procedures.
  • Add or modify test procedures for diverging grid code requirements.

(i.e. countries not aligned with EN standard.)

  • Assist our bench operator team on HILS bench system set-up, de-bug. & testing.

  1. Test data analysis:
  • Analyse & summarize HILS bench test results w.r.t. grid code compliance, functional compliance, power quality, ISO 15118-20 communication, wall-box to back-end communication (OCPP 2.x), ….
  • Identify issues & formulate improvement points toward hardware design & software control teams.

Your Profile

  • You are fluent in English (TME’s business language)

Any other EU language would be a plus

  • Master in Electric or (Power) Electronic engineering with a strong affinity for the subject.
  • Experience with EU grid codes and AC V2G eco system would a plus.
  • Experience with a rapid prototyping environment (i.e. dSpace, Simulink) and grid level electrical testing would be another bonus.
  • Knowledge of “Snowflake” data platform would be useful à used for test data storage & processing.
  • Most importantly you are a motivated team player, ready to actively collaborate in our young and dynamic team
