Vehicle Performance Engineering division (VPE) is part of Research and Development group at Toyota Motor Europe Technical Center in Zaventem, Belgium. Our division is in charge of:
• Identifying market and customer requirements and trends, and turning them into development targets for vehicles, their subsystems, and down to components
• Development of passenger vehicles for European market
• Researching state of the art and beyond state of the art technologies for implementation in future vehicles
The Vehicle Comfort team’s main tasks are: vehicle development and long-term research /pre-development in the area of NVH and Drivability.

Ever more stringent pass by noise regulations in combination with the recent emergence of EV mobility are creating continuous changing vehicle soundscapes & uncharted customer expectations. Future vehicles with reduced powertrain sounds can no longer sustain an appropriate level of informative & emotional feedback with humans out- & inside the vehicle, nor can they guarantee masking of unwanted interior noises. The need therefore rises for new (synthetic) sounds which can provide suitable acoustic feedback for different levels of human-vehicle interaction while maintaining a comfortable acoustic environment. With increasing application of ADAS, the vehicle soundscape will ever more contribute to vehicle safety e.g. by creating a continuous situational awareness for surrounding pedestrians & occupants or by notifying the need for control take-over from the vehicle.
In order to prepare the ideal future vehicle soundscape, your objective is to create neurological models for comfort perception & safety recognition, for acoustic stimuli in relation to other cognitive stimuli (vestibular, visual). By correlating acoustic KPI’s with these models, you can propose & validate a soundscape in a specific case study.
• Master's degree (or equivalent) in engineering, psychology or physics which qualifies for a PhD track application
• Experience in correlating subjective perception with objective data
• Strong affinity with acoustics & mathematics
• Signal processing knowledge (time & frequency domain analysis) is an asset
• Experience in the area of AI (e.g. neural networking) is an asset
• Capable to work in team & independently
• Proficient English capability, ability to work in a multi-cultural
